Race:1 (29) CHEUNG HONG HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1800 m

WONDERFUL CHASER and WEALTHY FORTUNE bumped at the start. After this, despite being vigorously ridden in the early stages, WEALTHY FORTUNE failed to muster speed.
SWEET BEAN began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of PROUD SKY which became unbalanced. After this, SWEET BEAN was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover.
At the entrance to the Straight, WONDERFUL CHASER and GENTLEMEN raced tight.
Shortly after entering the Straight, PROUD SKY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of THE JOY OF GIVING which got its head on the side and lay in. After this, THE JOY OF GIVING continued to lay in, requiring its rider changing his whip into his right hand. PROUD SKY then had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and passing the 200 Metres.
When questioned, C Murray stated that after the 1300 Metres THE JOY OF GIVING was taken into a three wide position without cover by GENTLEMEN which shifted out from behind HOLY UNICORN. He said at this time THE JOY OF GIVING was travelling comfortably and he was reluctant to steady his mount in an attempt to obtain cover behind GENTLEMEN and also due to PROUD SKY having improved its position to be racing just inside the heels of THE JOY OF GIVING. He said when HOLY UNICORN led the race and held a margin over GENTLEMEN, he had hoped that GENTLEMEN may shift back in to race behind that horse which may allow THE JOY OF GIVING to shift in accordingly. He said however GENTLEMEN remained racing in a one-off position and consequently THE JOY OF GIVING was left racing wide and without cover for the remainder of the race.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of EASTERN PROWESS, Apprentice H T Mo stated that the horse did not travel at any stage of the race. He said EASTERN PROWESS came under pressure near the 700 Metres, did not respond to his riding and finished off the race only one-paced. A veterinary inspection of EASTERN PROWESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
A veterinary inspection of SWEET BEAN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
EASTERN PROWESS, HOLY UNICORN and THE JOY OF GIVING were sent for sampling.

Race:2 (30) HING MAN HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

Making the first turn near the 1050 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND became unbalanced of its own accord.
Passing the 800 Metres, ALL YOU NEED got its head up when awkwardly placed behind LONDON CITY which was being steadied to allow CALIFORNIA ELITE to cross.
Near the 250 Metres, ALL YOU NEED was checked when attempting to improve inside CALIFORNIA ELITE where there was insufficient room due to CALIFORNIA ELITE laying in as it was giving ground. As the Stewards were satisfied that at no time had ALL YOU NEED established running to the inside of CALIFORNIA ELITE, no further action was taken. In this incident, CALIFORNIA ELITE became badly unbalanced when bumped on the hindquarters by ALL YOU NEED. ALL YOU NEED was further steadied when disappointed for running inside SPLIT OF A SECOND passing the 150 Metres and was then unable to obtain clear running over the final stages of the race and consequently was not fully tested.
Passing the 250 Metres, CLEAR CHOICE was shifted in away from the heels of MICKEY RICH which got its head on the side and shifted in before being straightened. CLEAR CHOICE was then shifted to the inside of SUPER EURO STAR approaching the 200 Metres in an attempt to obtain clear running, however, was checked passing the 150 Metres when disappointed for running between SUPER EURO STAR and LONDON CITY where there was insufficient room.
Approaching the 200 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND raced tight between CLEAR CHOICE which shifted in after being awkwardly placed inside MICKEY RICH and CALIFORNIA ELITE which shifted out to relieve the tightening to ALL YOU NEED.
After the 100 Metres, SPLIT OF A SECOND, which was attempting to improve into tight running inside LONDON CITY, was steadied due to that horse shifting in marginally under pressure.
Throughout the race, TRAVEL SUCCESSOR travelled wide and without cover.
A veterinary inspection of ALL YOU NEED immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA ELITE immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm, was lame in its left front leg and also an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA ELITE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CLEAR CHOICE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
SPLIT OF A SECOND, MICKEY RICH and TRAVEL SUCCESSOR were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (32) HING MAN HANDICAP (Sec2) Class 4 1200 m

Approaching the 1100 Metres, CAPTAIN BOSS raced tight between JUNZI which shifted in and APPLAUSE which shifted out when racing tight outside AMBITIOUS HEART.
Throughout the race, I’M THE CONQUIST travelled wide and without cover.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding of U Rispoli (FANTASTIC FABIO), 4th placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse’s finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race where circumstances permit.
The Stewards questioned U Rispoli, the rider of FANTASTIC FABIO, regarding his riding in the early and middle stages. U Rispoli stated that he was instructed to ride FANTASTIC FABIO positively in the early stages and obtain the lead if possible as the horse had previously raced well when ridden in this manner. He said however that he was told that if another runner was intent on leading, it was acceptable for him to take a trailing position in those circumstances. He said in accordance with his instructions he rode FANTASTIC FABIO along in the early stages to ensure that he crossed VICTORY POWER which was racing on the rail. He said making the turn near the 1000 Metres he commenced to steady his mount in order to cross VICTORY POWER without having to make too much use of his horse. He said when he did this he received a call from the rider of VICTORY POWER and he therefore allowed FANTASTIC FABIO to improve its position further forward of VICTORY POWER so as to cross that horse. He said approaching the 900 Metres as he was crossing VICTORY POWER, AMBITIOUS HEART improved its position to be racing to the outside of FANTASTIC FABIO. He said whilst he intended at this time to retain the lead, AMBITIOUS HEART was travelling strongly to his outside and he felt that he would have had to ride his mount along in order to prevent AMBITIOUS HEART from crossing FANTASTIC FABIO. He added he felt that it was in FANTASTIC FABIO’s best interests not to be ridden along at this stage of the race and engage in a speed battle with AMBITIOUS HEART which, in his opinion, continued to travel strongly. He said he therefore elected to allow AMBITIOUS HEART to cross FANTASTIC FABIO at the 800 Metres and obtain a trailing position behind that horse. After considering the relevant sectionals of tonight’s race and the manner in which he had ridden the horse previously, in particular when he rode it from a similar barrier over the course and distance when the horse retained the lead, the Stewards informed U Rispoli that, in their opinion, he had erred in not making more of an attempt to retain the lead inside AMBITIOUS HEART. U Rispoli was told to ride his mount in such a manner so as to obtain the most advantageous position given the circumstances of the race and the horse’s established racing pattern.
VICTORY POWER, AMBITIOUS HEART and CAPTAIN BOSS were sent for sampling.

Also in the Straight, GARLIC YEAH lay in and proved reluctant to shift to the outside of SPARKLING SWORD, resulting in GARLIC YEAH being awkwardly placed for some distance close to the heels of SPARKLING SWORD approaching and passing the 150 Metres. Then near the 100 Metres, GARLIC YEAH was shifted to the inside of SPARKLING SWORD.
A veterinary inspection of TEN FLAMES and ULTIMATE DREAM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

JADE THEATRE had some difficulty obtaining clear running until passing the 200 Metres.

After being shifted further to the inside of STAR OF JOY in an attempt to obtain a tight run to that horse’s inside passing the 100 Metres, THE JUDGE improved its position to be racing inside BREEDERS’ STAR which resulted in BREEDERS’ STAR then being unable to continue improving inside STAR OF JOY which shifted in marginally under pressure. This resulted in BREEDERS’ STAR not being able to be tested for the final 100 Metres of the race.
Close to the finishing line, THE JUDGE was awkwardly placed inside the heels of STAR OF JOY and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.

After being ridden along in the early stages from a wide barrier, KINGSFIELD, when racing very wide after passing the winning post on the first occasion, was steadied to obtain cover. HELENE CHARISMA, which was following, was checked away from the heels of WINNING FAITH in consequence.
D Whyte (LIMITLESS) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the 1300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CIRCUIT GLORY, resulting in that horse losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled and being checked. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 3 October 2018 and to expire on Monday, 8 October 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). General

1. 9 September 2018 Sha Tin Racemeeting – Race 7 (25)

The Stewards tonight questioned K Teetan regarding his riding of ELECTRIC LIGHTNING in the middle stages in this race. K Teetan stated that after being in a three wide position behind THE FULL BLOOM, he was able to shift in behind RED ELYSEES approaching the 1000 Metres in a two wide position. He said he was content to follow RED ELYSEES as that horse was trailing SMART CHARADE, the favourite for the race. He said he continued to follow RED ELYSEES as THE FULL BLOOM, which was racing to the outside of RED ELYSEES, had been three wide and without cover throughout the race and he felt that following RED ELYSEES and SMART CHARADE, which he both considered to be good chances in the race, would be in ELECTRIC LIGHTNING’s best interests as he expected THE FULL BLOOM not be able to quicken as well as those horses due to having been forced to race wide and without cover. He said for this reason he elected not to shift out from behind RED ELYSEES to follow THE FULL BLOOM after the 600 Metres which allowed LET US WIN to improve its position around ELECTRIC LIGHTNING. He said at the entrance to the Straight he immediately shifted ELECTRIC LIGHTNING to the inside of RED ELYSEES to improve between that horse and PO CHING TREASURE, however, when that run closed, he was required to shift ELECTRIC LIGHTNING to the outside of runners near the 300 Metres to obtain clear running. K Teetan agreed with the Stewards that, in retrospect, he should have shifted out to follow THE FULL BLOOM which would have provided ELECTRIC LIGHTNING the opportunity of shifting directly to the outside of that horse rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight and obtaining clear running. He was advised to ensure that he positions his horses so as to obtain clear running wherever circumstances permit so that there can be no room for query regarding his riding.
