Race: 1 (329)PATERSON HANDICAPClass 51000 m
On jumping, WORLD CITY lifted its front feet off the ground and consequently lost ground.
CARRY TO WIN began only fairly and then on jumping became unbalanced when crowded for room inside SPARKLING TALENT which shifted in. After this, SPARKLING TALENT, from a wide barrier, was shifted across behind runners to obtain cover and, despite being vigorously ridden in the early and middle stages, raced detached from the main body of the field.
A FAST ONE shifted out at the start and bumped RUMINARE.
From the outside barrier, HIGHLAND DRAGON was steadied in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain cover.
Near the 950 Metres, KING’S STEED shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of GLORY HORSIE.
Passing the 800 Metres, KING’S STEED momentarily raced in restricted room between ACTUARIAT and GLORY HORSIE which got its head on the side and shifted in marginally away from KIM GLORY.
Approaching the 600 Metres, KING’S STEED got its head up when awkwardly placed inside the heels of GLORY HORSIE. For some distance after this, KING’S STEED continued to get its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GLORY HORSIE.
For the majority of the race, KIM GLORY travelled wide and without cover and making the turn near the 550 Metres was awkwardly placed outside the heels of TRENDIFUL which lay out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of RUMINARE.
In the early part of the Straight, A FAST ONE and HIGHLAND DRAGON raced tight.
Passing the 300 Metres, CARRY TO WIN was shifted in away from the heels of WORLD CITY to obtain clear running.
Passing the 50 Metres, KING’S STEED shifted out and bumped KIM GLORY, causing both horses to become unbalanced. After this, KING’S STEED and KIM GLORY raced tight and then close to the finishing line, KIM GLORY was crowded for room between KING’S STEED and A FAST ONE which lay in under pressure. In this incident, KING’S STEED also became unbalanced. Because of the manner in which A FAST ONE was shifting in, D Whyte, the rider of that horse, was not able to ride the horse out over the concluding stages.
After the race, it was noted that HIGHLAND DRAGON was making an abnormal breathing noise. The Veterinary Officer said the horse was a "roarer” as previously reported, however, in addition HIGHLAND DRAGON was found to have a displaced soft palate.
A veterinary inspection of SPARKLING TALENT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
ACTUARIAT and CARRY TO WIN were sent for sampling.

Race: 2 (330)GREAT GEORGE HANDICAP (Sec2)Class 41200 m
RICHCITY FORTUNE (M Chadwick) shifted out on jumping and bumped GRACYDAD. A short distance after the start, RICHCITY FORTUNE and GRACYDAD were steadied when crowded for room between NICE FANDANGO and CALIFORNIA ASPAR which got its head on the side and shifted out after being brushed by EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE. In this incident, CALIFORNIA ASPAR became unbalanced after making contact with RICHCITY FORTUNE, resulting in that horse shifting out further. After the race, M Chadwick stated that he was instructed to lead on RICHCITY FORTUNE, however, after being hampered in this incident, he was not able to obtain as forward a position as had been hoped.
SHOW MISSION shifted out shortly after the start and bumped ELEGANCE PROMISE.
From the outside barriers, HAPPY HAPPY, SHARPMIND and DR RACE were all steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
FUNNY BUDDIES was also steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, FUNNY BUDDIES lay in and brushed the running rail.
Passing the 400 Metres, HAPPY HAPPY was checked away from the heels of GRACYDAD.
At the entrance to the Straight, DR RACE shifted out to obtain clear running and bumped the hindquarters of MASTER VIKING which became unbalanced.
P-C Boudot (GRACYDAD) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 150 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of HAPPY HAPPY, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. P-C Boudot was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Wednesday, 31 January 2018 and to expire on Monday, 5 February 2018 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Boudot’s good race riding record.
Passing the 150 Metres, SHARPMIND shifted in under pressure, resulting in its rider, U Rispoli, changing his whip over into his right hand.
Over about the final 100 Metres, FUNNY BUDDIES lay in under pressure.
Near the 75 Metres, SHOW MISSION was shifted out away from the heels of NICE FANDANGO. When SHOW MISSION was shifted out, GRACYDAD, which was following, was inconvenienced.
Throughout the race, MASTER VIKING travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground.
A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA ASPAR immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea.
EXCEPTIONAL DESIRE and NICE FANDANGO were sent for sampling.

Race: 3 (331)GREAT GEORGE HANDICAP (Sec1)Class 41200 m
COOL ARMY bounded in the air at the start and then on landing became badly unbalanced, resulting in the horse losing ground. Before being allowed to race again, COOL ARMY will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test.
SPRING WIN shifted in at the start and bumped NASHASHUK.
From the outside barriers, COUR VALANT, LOVE CHUNGHWA, CLEAR CHOICE and ALCAZAR were all shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
When being steadied in the lead, NASHASHUK got its head up on a number of occasions between the 1100 Metres and the 900 Metres.
Making the turn approaching the 1000 Metres, ALCAZAR became unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of CONFUCIUS SPIRIT which was awkwardly placed outside the heels of PADDINGTON.
Making the turn after the 1000 Metres, COUR VALANT got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of THE SHOW, resulting in COUR VALANT being awkwardly placed inside that horse for some distance.
Passing the 600 Metres, CLEAR CHOICE got its head up when being checked away from the heels of COUR VALANT.
Approaching and passing the 500 Metres, COUR VALANT was checked away from the heels of THE SHOW.
Rounding the Home Turn, CLEAR CHOICE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of COUR VALANT.
Passing the 250 Metres, O Doleuze (COOL ARMY) dropped his whip.
Approaching the 50 Metres, CLEAR CHOICE lay in under pressure behind THE SHOW.
When questioned, C Schofield stated that it was intended for PADDINGTON to be ridden in a forward position. He said it was expected that BINGO would lead the race and it was hoped that PADDINGTON would be able to race outside that horse. He said he was told however if BINGO was not ridden to lead the race, then it was acceptable for him to take up the running. He said PADDINGTON began only fairly which resulted in most horses drawn to the inside of PADDINGTON immediately having an advantage over it. He said because of this he elected not to press forward on PADDINGTON, rather he felt the opportunity was available to shift the horse behind the speed and obtain a good trailing position. He said when being steadied in the early stages to obtain a position behind THE SHOW, PADDINGTON travelled keenly and it took him some time to be able to steady his mount such that he could direct PADDINGTON in behind THE SHOW. He added this allowed COUR VALANT the opportunity to improve its position inside PADDINGTON which resulted in that horse racing further back in the field than had been intended and having to race wide and without cover throughout.
A veterinary inspection of PADDINGTON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
NASHASHUK, SPRING WIN and BINGO were sent for sampling.

Race: 4 (332)KINGSTON HANDICAPClass 41650 m
FOREVER POSH was withdrawn on 9.1.18 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter KING BOUNTIFUL (M Chadwick). Before being allowed to race again, FOREVER POSH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
KING BOUNTIFUL and MR KOOL bumped at the start.
Shortly after the start, SEE ME NOW shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of GOOD CHOICE AHEAD which became unbalanced.
From the outside barrier, SUPER CLAN was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
Near the 1600 Metres, MR KOOL, which was being ridden along to obtain a forward position, was crowded for room between VARA PEARL which got its head on the side and shifted out and SPINNING DANCER which shifted in.
Passing the 1300 Metres, PEARL WARM WARM was crowded for room inside CONTRIBUTION which was taken in by DUTCH WINDMILL (C Schofield). C Schofield was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he leaves comfortable racing room for his fellow riders in similar circumstances. For some distance after this, PEARL WARM WARM raced tight inside CONTRIBUTION.
Passing the 300 Metres, PEARL WARM WARM was shifted in after being disappointed for running between MY BLESSING and DUTCH WINDMILL which got its head on the side and lay in. PEARL WARM WARM then had some difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 100 Metres was awkwardly placed behind MY BLESSING and DUTCH WINDMILL. Because of this, PEARL WARM WARM was not able to be properly tested.
A veterinary inspection of VARA PEARL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
CONTRIBUTION and GOOD CHOICE AHEAD were sent for sampling.

Race: 5 (333)CAUSEWAY HANDICAPClass 31000 m
LUCKY GUY began only fairly and then shortly after the start was steadied away from the heels of MR RIGHT which was taken out by MOMENT OF POWER.
KHAKI began only fairly.
Shortly after the start, CIRCUIT KING was crowded for room between TRIUMPHANT JEWEL which shifted out and MONEY BOY which shifted in after being bumped on the hindquarters by GENERAL IRON. After this, GENERAL IRON was shifted across behind runners.
Also from a wide barrier, WAYFOONG VINNIE was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
After travelling a short distance, ENCORE BOY shifted out and brushed PEACE N PROSPERITY.
At the entrance to the Straight, ENCORE BOY shifted out and bumped PEACE N PROSPERITY.
When questioned, K C Leung stated that he was asked to try and lead on MR RIGHT if the horse showed sufficient speed to be able to cross the two horses directly to its inside, in particular MOMENT OF POWER which was drawn immediately inside MR RIGHT. He said MOMENT OF POWER began very well and clearly showed more early speed than MR RIGHT and as it appeared that MOMENT OF POWER would race outside OCEAN ROAR, he elected to take up a position behind the leaders rather than racing in a three wide position without cover. He said after initially racing keenly leaving the 800 Metres, MR RIGHT commenced to travel well, however, was inclined to lay out rounding the turn after the 600 Metres. He said making the Home Turn when racing tight inside MOMENT OF POWER, MR RIGHT ran out across the heels of that horse, resulting in MR RIGHT being severely checked and losing ground. He added after this he balanced MR RIGHT up and placed it under pressure, however, the horse gave ground noticeably in the Straight A veterinary inspection of MR RIGHT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MR RIGHT, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MR RIGHT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of CIRCUIT KING immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
ENCORE BOY, MONEY BOY and GENERAL IRON were sent for sampling.

Race: 6 (334)THE JANUARY CUP (HANDICAP)Group Three1800 m
MARVEL HERO began only fairly and then shortly after the start was crowded for room between GENERAL SHERMAN which began awkwardly and CITRON SPIRIT which shifted out.
PACKING DRAGON was slow to begin and then was ridden along in an attempt to obtain a prominent position, however, near the 1700 Metres became unbalanced when bumped by DINOZZO. PACKING DRAGON then had to be ridden along for a considerable distance to obtain a forward position, however, throughout the race travelled wide and without cover.
From the outside barrier, DINOZZO was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Despite being vigorously ridden along in the early stages, HARBOUR MASTER failed to muster speed.
Passing the 1300 Metres, GENERAL SHERMAN momentarily raced in restricted room inside HARBOUR MASTER and then near the 1050 Metres got its head up and became unbalanced.
GENERAL SHERMAN lost its right hind plate passing the 750 Metres.
CITRON SPIRIT was badly held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and passing the 250 Metres was checked when unable to improve between PACKING DRAGON and DINOZZO.
Passing the 200 Metres, PIKACHU was shifted to the outside of THE GOLDEN AGE to obtain clear running after being disappointed for a run inside that horse. When PIKACHU was shifted out, MARVEL HERO was inconvenienced.
When questioned regarding the performance of DOYENI, B Prebble stated that after being shifted across behind runners from the wide barrier, DOYENI was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages despite being ridden along. He said when being hard ridden to improve its position, DOYENI got its head up and would not race tractably. He said it was not until near the 1200 Metres that DOYENI commenced to show more response to his riding. He said he then had to ride the horse aggressively in the Back Straight in order to make up ground in an attempt to tack onto the main body of the field and it was not until after the 600 Metres that the horse was able to make up ground. He added in the Straight DOYENI finished off the race fairly considering the manner in which it travelled in the early stages of the race. A veterinary inspection of DOYENI immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The racing manners of DOYENI were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DOYENI will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial.
MARVEL HERO, EAGLE WAY and THE GOLDEN AGE were sent for sampling.

Passing the 1300 Metres, TEN FLAMES got its head up when travelling keenly and awkwardly placed close to the heels of LAND GRANT.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, THE SYLPH got its head on the side, lay out and was awkwardly placed inside LAND GRANT.
Over the concluding stages, LAND GRANT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MISTER MONTE and consequently was not able to be ridden out all the way to the end of the race.
Throughout the race, BANK ON RED travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DR WIN WIN, Z Purton stated that his mount was able to obtain a forward position in the early stages and he was happy with the manner in which it travelled. He said at the entrance to the Straight he was able to immediately obtain clear running to the inside of GO BEAUTY GO, however, DR WIN WIN did not quicken and, despite being fully tested, commenced to give ground shortly after entering the Straight. He added whilst DR WIN WIN did not feel sore, the horse became unbalanced when being eased down after the race. A veterinary inspection of DR WIN WIN immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of DR WIN WIN, which finished at the rear of the field, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, DR WIN WIN will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
The Stewards were advised by the Clerk of the Scales that B Prebble (PHOTON WILLIE) weighed out 2 lbs overweight after no overweight was notified at the time of declarations. After taking evidence from B Prebble, the Stewards adjourned the matter so as to allow Mr P O’Sullivan, the trainer of PHOTON WILLIE, and his assistant trainer to be interviewed prior to the first race of the Sha Tin racemeeting on Saturday, 13 January 2018.
A veterinary inspection of GO BEAUTY GO immediately following the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, GO BEAUTY GO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
MISTER MONTE, WINNING FAITH and LITTERATEUR were sent for sampling.
