Childs reunited with Written By at Sandown

Jordan Childs has reunited with Blue Diamond winner Written By for the first time on the eve of spring as the colt ramps up his Coolmore Stud Stakes preparation.

The Group 1-winning jockey had been eager to get back on the horse who gave him his maiden elite-level victory in autumn, and got the opportunity on Friday morning at Sandown.

"I kept asking Grahame (Begg) when can I come up and gallop him and he kept saying 'not yet, not yet'," Childs explained.

"So I was pretty rapt when I got the call-up last week to come and gallop him this week.

"We just trotted up the straight at Sandown and then went a slow canter to about the 1000-metre mark.

"From the 700m we improved up to evens and then went to 14s and went about a 12 [seconds] for the last furlong.

"He did it really easily, he was just floating underneath me, he felt as though if I had have given him a squeeze he would have really stretched out to the line.

"Even though he's not big in size he feels like you're riding a bigger horse because he's got such a long stride on him and I think that's one of his biggest attributes."

Trainer Grahame Begg said Written By is doing everything right at this early stage but that things won't start to heat up until next month.

"He's big and strong and he's where we want him to be at this stage of his preparation," Begg said.

"He's holding his condition and weight well … he's in a good place at the moment.

"We chose today to come over to Sandown and give him a little break from the farm and to stretch his legs.

"He'll start to taper up once he's had his jumpout here in about three weeks, that's when it's time to get serious with him."
