2018 Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic- What the beaten jockeys said:
2nd IN HER TIME Corey Brown
Ran terrific. I thought I was following the right horses in the run, I was directly behind Redzel, but they were taking me nowhere. I had to wait for the speed to go into the race, went back to the inside and she got into clear air she hit the line solid.
3rd (dead-heat) JUNGLE CAT (IRE) William Buick
Ran great. He’s going to be retired now so it was a good way for him to sign off.
3rd (dead-heat) PIERATA Tommy Berry
Super run. He definitely got a bit lost down the straight and I would have preferred to have drawn the outside. First time down the straight he’s done a good job.
We ended up getting a trail from the speed horses. The ground might have gone against him a little bit, he gave a good kick, but they whizzed by us the last bit.
6th SPIRIT OF VALOR (USA)
Travelled very well but just levelled out. Might be better around a bend.
She ran well. Had a good run, was making good ground into the straight but she’s just a couple of lengths below those good horses.
8th BRAVE SMASH (JPN)
I’d love to have it again, he ran really well. Unfortunately I zigged when I should have zagged. The horse I chose to follow didn’t take me into the race and as it was I was where the winner was.
It was unfortunate Pierata ran across his line at a vital stage.
10th REDKIRK WARRIOR (GB)
Disappointing. Had a lovely run in behind U S Navy Flag, he took us to about the 300m, I got off his back and he travelled up well but he struggled to let down the last 200m.
11th INTELLIGENCE CROSS (USA)
Travelled well early but couldn’t go with them when they sprinted on the course proper.
INVINCIBLE STAR Stephen Baster
She wasn’t herself today. She’s had a bad day.
U S NAVY FLAG (USA) Ryan Moore
He ran disappointing. He doesn’t like it here for some reason. He hasn’t performed the way he can.
FLEET REVIEW (USA) James McDonald
Not much to add there.
