Voltigeur for sequence as Lanigan ponders St Leger
08 Aug 2012 | Racingpost.com

Trainer David Lanigan revealed on Monday that Derby second Main Sequence could run in the Neptune Investment Management Great Voltigeur Stakes before connections decide to bid for Classic glory in the Ladbrokes St Leger on September 15.

Main Sequence finished an unlucky fourth in the Group 1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris last month, when Ted Durcan was forced to sit and suffer up the home straight, and Lanigan said the Great Voltigeur was under consideration for the son of Aldebaran.

The John Gosden-trained Lucarno was the last horse to secure the Voltigeur-St Leger double in 2007 and Lanigan said on Monday: "He's been fine since France and did his first proper piece of work on Saturday, which went well and he scoped clean yesterday.

"He's got one or two options but he may go to York next for the Great Voltigeur. The Leger is in our thoughts but nothing is set in stone.

"You never know if they will get that sort of trip [1m6½f] but he relaxes well and would give himself every chance. All he did in France last time was stay."

Main Sequence, who also holds an entry in the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes, is available at 12-1 with the sponsors for the St Leger at Doncaster. He is 8-1 with William Hill and bet365.
