Melbourne Cup hopeful Mount Athos to miss Ebor
20 Jul 2012 | Racingpost.com  Mount Athos, the favourite for next month's Betfred Ebor at York, is set to miss the prestigious handicap, trainer Luca Cumani revealed on Friday.

The son of Montjeu is unbeaten in two starts since joining Cumani and slammed High Jinx by four lengths over the Ebor course and distance last Saturday.

Mount Athos would have to carry a penalty in the Ebor for his latest win, while Cumani needs to run him again shortly to qualify for his main end-of-season target, the Emirates Melbourne Cup, for which he is at $26.00 on TAB Sportsbet's market.

Marwan Koukash's five-year-old is also entered in the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown on August 9.

Cumani said: "I can't run Mount Athos in the Ebor as he already has top weight and another 6lb penalty would kill him. We will have to look elsewhere but quite where that is I don't know."
