Homecoming Queen, who gave Aidan O'Brien his second Qipco 1,000 Guineas win when trouncing her rivals by nine lengths at Newmarket in May, has been retired.

Her win at Newmarket, on ground described as good to soft, was a remarkable performance, winning in a time more than two seconds quicker than wonderhorse and stablemate Camelot managed in the previous day's 2,000 Guineas.

O'Brien, who trained the filly for Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, said on Thursday: "It has been decided that Homecoming Queen has done enough and she has been retired. She was a brilliant filly and her performance at Newmarket was very special. She has a wonderful pedigree and did us all proud."

The third Group 1 winner from her dam, Lagrion, who also produced Dylan Thomas and Queen's Logic, Homecoming Queen won four of her 16 races, starting off with a victory in a nursery at Fairyhouse last September when rated only 72.

She went on to win a Listed event at the Curragh before her two-year-old campaign, in which she ran 11 times, was concluded when tailed off in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Her Classic campaign started off with a whimper, finishing ninth of 11, beaten 13½l in a Curragh Group 3, before hinting at what was to come by landing the Group 3 Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial in April.

Her piece de resistance came under Ryan Moore at Newmarket. Quick from the stalls, she blasted her rivals out the water, setting a ferocious gallop and staying on stronger than any of her rivals to draw away impressively in the final three furlongs at odds of 25-1 with stablemate and 13-8 favourite Maybe back in third.

Well suited by easy ground, she failed to add to her 1,000 Guineas success, finishing fourth when favourite for the Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas and only eighth when again favourite for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, which proved to be her final start.
