Fiorente strikes for Stoute in Princess of Wales
13 Jul 2012 | Racingpost.com

Report: Newmarket (July), Thursday

Princess of Wales's Goldsmiths Stakes (Group 2) 1m4f, 3yo+

Sir Michael Stoute has broken his recent pattern of landing the Princess of Wales's on alternate years, winning four of the last seven renewals, as he makes it back-to-back successes courtesy of Fiorente.

Second to Nathaniel at Royal Ascot last year and only just touched off by Namibian in the Gordon Stakes, Fiorente has disappointed in three starts this season but he bounced back to form in emphatic style.

Ryan Moore arguably won the race for his mount, waiting nearly a furlong longer to deliver his challenge after Liam Jones made an early bid for home on Harris Tweed.

Andrea Atzeni, who hugged the rail on eventual runner-up Joshua Tree, and Tom McLaughlin, who crossed the entire track to challenge on the far rail on third-home Red Cadeaux, both tried to follow Harris Tweed's early move.

With the trio wilting, Moore powered through to win by a comfortable two and three-quarter lengths. The 11-2 shot impressed Sir Michael Stoute, who said: "He's been off a long time and he's a big horse and lightly raced, so I think it's just taken a lot of winding up.

"We've always held him in high esteem and I think he would be equally as effective over ten furlongs and I think he's impervious with regards to ground."

On future targets, Stoute added: "It's time to stop and think. I was panicking a bit with him but he's won well today, so we'll have a sit down and come up with a plan."
