Bumper crowd closes 'vintage' Royal Ascot
24 Jun 2012 | Racenews Newslink The crowd figure for the final day on Saturday at Royal Ascot is 77,863, compared to 76,955 in 2011.

Attendance at the five-day Royal Meeting therefore totals 280,268, compared to 294,385 in 2011.

Ascot’s Chief Executive Charles Barnett said: “It’s been an absolutely tremendous week capped off with the great Black Caviar winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in unusual but exciting circumstances.

“Her win adds to so many wonderful memories from this week, including victories for Her Majesty The Queen, for Frankie Dettori in the Gold Cup, for Frankel in the opening Queen Anne Stakes and for visiting runners from Hong Kong, Germany and Ireland, in addition to those from Britain, and Black Caviar from Australia, of course.

“Our congratulations go to John Gosden, winner of the QIPCO Leading Trainers’ Award, and to Ryan Moore, who takes the equivalent award for jockeys.

“Today’s crowd figure is exceptional and we are delighted with the increase we achieved on Tuesday. We knew we would have a reduction on Thursday and Friday for reasons we have explained.

“All in all we have to consider it has been a vintage Royal Ascot.”
