Mayson's July Cup triumph was the best performance of UK season so far over 1200m
16 Jul 2012 | Racenews Newslink Mayson put up by the best performance of his career and in the process the best by any horse over 1200m (six furlongs) in the UK this season when bounding clear in Saturday's Darley July Cup to win by five lengths on heavy going at Newmarket's July Course.

He has been awarded a new mark of 119 by the BHA handicappers, up nine pounds from his old rating of 110 and just a pound below Little Bridge's performance of 120 when winning the five furlong King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Mayson is now ranked a pound higher than Bated Breath in the QIPCO British Champions Series Sprint table and two ahead of Black Caviar, who achieved a rating of 117 when just lasting home in the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot.

The Darley July Cup runner-up, The Cheka, ran to 108, a little below his official mark of 111, while Society Rock in third ran to 106, well below his official rating of 117.

Like Mayson, Friday's Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes winner, Giofra, also put up the best performance of her career to date when just mastering Elusive Kate in the Fillies & Mares contest over a mile.

She ran to 116, a pound above her French rating, and could now contest the next Fillies & Mares race, the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday, August 4.

Elusive Kate ran to 115. Although a pound below her career-best performance when winning the Prix Marcel Boussac on Arc Day last year, to run to 115 on her seasonal reappearance and on ground softer than ideal was a fine performance.

There will surely be a lot more to come from the John Gosden-trained filly in the coming months and there will probably be little to choose between her and stablemate Fallen For You, who clocked 117 when winning the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

The Francois Doumen-trained Siyouma ran to 113 in third, a nice improvement on the rating of 109 which she took into the race.

With Aidan O'Brien's fabulous run in British Group 1 races having come to a temporary pause since So You Think's Prince of Wales's Stakes victory last month, John Gosden was able to make up a little more ground on the runaway Trainer of the Series leader courtesy of Elusive Kate's second place.

He has now reached 85 points, but is still 65 behind O'Brien on 150 after 18 races in the 35-race Series, which culminates on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday, October 20.

Ryan Moore went into a clear second place in the Jockey of the Series table courtesy of the 5 points he picked up from Society Rock's third place in the Darley July Cup, but he is still 50 points adrift of the leader, Joseph O'Brien.
