President Cup to Conceal 12 Jan 2004
By Matt Howard, Dubai Racing Club

Conceal, trained by Rashid Bouresly and ridden by Gary Hind, came in as a late reserve to win the Listed HH The President Cup for Thoroughbred over 1,400 metres at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday evening. Conceal was originally listed as a reserve for the race but following the withdrawal of Orchestrated, the son of Cadeaux Genereux was given his chance in the Listed event.

Misraah, ridden by Michael Hussey, took the field along with the Bouresly-trained Mahfooth, into the straight it was Conceal who set sail from home with the Allan Smith-trained pair of Walmooh and the National Day Cup winner Baaridd in hot pursuit. The line came in time with Conceal claiming a length and a quarter win over the Paul Smith-partnered Walmooh and Kieren Fallon’s mount Baaridd in third.

Conceal was coming off a run two days ago when fourth at Jebel Ali, it was also the first win for Bouresly since taking out his UAE trainer’s licence on Saturday.

Denyai, trained by James Frazier, took the opener, the Al Ain Purebred Arabian Maiden, in impressive style under Paul Hanagan. Leeward, under David Hayse, and Sweet Memories took the field into the straight. Denyai was always well placed and came with a great run to take the lead 200 metres out and ran on for a five length win.

Sebastien Castellier aboard Al Nab’a and the Ryan Moore-partnered AF Jalmood had a great battle in the final 200 metres to the line in the second race of the evening, the Al Khazna Conditions over 1,300 metres. AF Jalmood had led since the stalls opened with the Julio Peromingo-trained Al Nab’a getting up to go head to head at the 200 metres marker.

Al Nab’a fought hard and got up by a short head over AF Jalmood, with Moutawaj and Willie Supple a further four lengths back in third.

Sadeem came with a perfectly timed run to give Frazier Jr and jockey Hanagan a winning double when landing the third race, the Al Khatam Handicap over 1,300 metres for Purebred Arabians. Mazin Al Kurdi’s Kleberson, who should win next time out, took the field into the straight, but Sadeem came between horses and ran on for a length and a quarter win over Jbel du Bac, Richard Mullen up.

Khaddour, under a strong ride by Fallon, stayed on in the final strides to win the fourth race, the Lulu Island over 2,200 metres. Coming into the straight it was the Allan Smith-trained Khaddour who led the way but the Supple-partnered Najum was right there. The pair battled to the line with Khaddour getting up by a neck from Najum.

The final race of the evening, the Al Nahdah Maiden for Purebred Arabians over 1,600 metres, went to the Smart-trained Mascha Al Mels who came with a late run down the straight to win from Watson’s Djaiman de Leyre with Gaven Birrer in the saddle.
