Star sprinter Buffering confirmed he is in the top three sprinters in the land after a dominant win in the $220,000 Schweppes Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Robert Heathcote-trained speedster has placed in seven group one races and if it wasn’t for the likes of Black Caviar and Hay List, he would have four of those race and be considering one of the best we have had.
Unfortunately for Buffering’s connections Black Caviar and Hay List do exist but he has still won 11 races and over $2million in prizemoney.
With Hugh Bowman on board, Buffering jumped well and was quick to take up the position behind race leader Malasun (Newitt). The concern for punters would have been the fact that Buffering had never won without leading. That was all about to change.
Bowman sat quietly on board Buffering as the field rounded the turn then switched around the heels of Malasun at the 300m and the race was over. The pair cruised up to the leader and kicked clear at the 200m to score a comfortable victory.
At the line the margin was a length and three quarters to Golden Archer (Nolen) with a further short half head to Stirling Grove (Williams) in third. The overall time was 56.95 with the last 600m run in 33.95.
“The fact that some of the media guys said he’s never won coming from behind and that was right because he never had but we were confident we had the horse right,” Heathcote said.
“Melissa Leech (strapper) lives with Buffering and knows him better than anyone and when I was down here on Tuesday to watch his work Mel came in and said he was spot on.
“There were 180,000 reasons why I added that race (McEwen Stakes) and it has paid off.
“We know that Black Caviar and Hay list aren’t here and my little tough bulldog has lived in their shadow for a long time and the opportunity is there for him to put his hand up and say ‘I’m the number one sprinter in this country’ until she (Black Caviar) comes back.
“Perth is still very much a viable option as is Hong Kong but now we go onto the Manikato and he deserves a Group One.
“We inoculated him for Hong Kong and he didn’t take it too well. The vet said to me, ‘your Spring might be in a bit of trouble’ and I expressed a few expletives."
“The conditions suited with the weight-for-age and my only little query was the 1200m back to the 1000m because it’s not the usual step in distance,” Bowman said.
“He is a quality sprinter, he’s shown that through his career and this might be his time.
“The pace was strong and I was going the pace I was comfortable with and Craig (Newitt, Malasun) pressed on from that and I was only too happy to come off his back and Buffering loved it.”
