Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate markets open
10 Aug 2012 | ThoroughbredNEWS News Desk TAB Sportsbet on Friday opened their markets for the $2.5m, Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at Caulfield on October 20th and the $3m, Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27th.

The bookmaker report that the 2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed at $26 is among the main chances to win back-to-back Caulfield Cups.

However, Green Moon, who finished second last year, should be better this time around and has opened favourite at $14.

Last year’s Emirates Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden at $26 is one of many chances at the top of the market. Manighar at $35 finished fourth last year, but has been a model of consistency since at Group 1 level.

Prairie Star at $81 is expected to be popular given its Australian connections.

The Mark Kavangh trained Atlantic Jewel heads an all star cast in the Cox Plate market. The unbeaten filly has opened $4.50 to add the WFA race to her list of achievements.

More Joyous at $7 was flying last preparation and looks in great shape for another tilt at the Cox Plate.

Three-year-olds Pierro, $9 and All Too Hard, $11 are expected to receive plenty of interest. All Too Hard has already been backed in the Golden Rose; $30,000 at $4.20.

French trainers have entered six runners for the race including Americain and Reliable Man.

TAB Sportsbet’s Melbourne Cup market has already been open for over two months with plenty of early interest.

International runners have commanded the most attention with Red Cadeaux the most popular. Last year’s winner Dunaden received a bet of $2,000 at $26 on Thursday night.

Lucas Cranach was the $17 favourite before sustaining an injury and being ruled out for the Spring.

Early Melbourne Cup bets include:

• $3,000 at $26 Red Cadeaux
• $3,000 x $2,000 at $35 Sanagas
• $2,000 at $26 Dunaden (9 August)
• $2,000 at $35 Mount Athos
• $1,000 at $71 Mount Athos
• $1,000 at $101 Moudre
