Brungle Cry (Street Cry) has monstered his opposition to become a $200,000 Grand National Hurdle (3900m) winner to cap his first season as a jumper.

Brungle Cry went into the Grand National Hurdle with just three jumps starts to his name but the Street Cry gelding belied his inexperience with a perfect jumping display.

Steven Pateman sent Brungle Cry to the lead after the field jumped the first hurdle. Brungle Cry’s opposition had little hope beating the four-year-old after giving him a start, leaving the Robert Smerdon-trained gelding to dictate proceedings.

Pateman kept Brungle Cry’s mind on the job for the first two thirds of the event before quickening the tempo with three jumps to negotiate.

Brungle Cry’s talent edge became clearer over the concluding stages as Pateman guided him to an eight-length win, which was Smerdon’s fifth success in the Grand National Hurdle.

"I had to keep him concentrating because he had been in front for so long.," Pateman said. "He just stays so well and his improvement next year, geez he's going to be exciting next year."

Brungle Cry defeated Zaman (Zabeel) by eight lengths while Gotta Take Care (Rubiton) finished another two lengths away in third. Brungle Cry started as a $1.65 favourite but paid $1.60 on the Victorian TAB. The winner completed the 3900-metre trip in 4:48.15, which is 17 seconds outside Black And Bent’s track record.

Smerdon said Brungle Cry had the potential to improve further during his five-year-old season. The trainer said the young hurdler had the potential to match the performance of former champion jumpers Some Are Bent and Black And Bent, who both won the Grand National Hurdle.

"For a horse to do what he has done with the lack of experience at his age, I think he is up there with those horses potentially," Smerdon said. "He has got to stay sound and do it."

Smerdon said he would spell Brungle Cry ahead of his return next season.
