NEWCASTLE – Wednesday 20 June 2012
Race 1:  ATC Super Saver Benchmark 71 Handicap 1850m – Trainer Mr P Snowden stated that Haut Normandie had pulled up well and he would drop the colt back to 1600m at its next start, as he felt Haut Normandie may not have run out the 1850m journey.
Race 3:  Tooheys New Benchmark 70 Handicap 1300m – Trainer Mr J Pride reported that Annabels had pulled up well and the only excuse he could offer was that the filly did not handle the rain affected track.  He added that a full veterinary inspection, including a lung wash, did not reveal any abnormalities and it is his intention to continue with Annabels’ preparation.
Race 5:  De Bortoli Benchmark 70 Handicap 1300m – Mr J Cummings, representing trainer Mr J B Cummings, stated he attributed the poor performance of Shuswap to the wet track conditions and also that the filly had had an interrupted preparation due to the recent wet weather.
Race 9:  Chevals Restaurant Benchmark 75 Handicap 1200m – Mr L Prior, representing trainer Mr C Waller, reported that The Heights had pulled up well following its unplaced effort.

Race 3:  Freshworld Handicap 1200m - Mr L Prior, representing trainer Mr C Waller, reported that Ingham Magic had pulled up well following its unplaced effort.
Race 4:  Champs Cafe Handicap 1300m – Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes reported that Mecir had failed to handle the heavy track conditions and had now been sent for a spell.
Race 6:  N & A Fruit Distributors Handicap 1500m – Trainer Mr B Murray reported that Isle Be Ready had pulled up well following its disappointing performance, which he attributed to the heavy going.  He added that Isle B Ready will be given a brief freshen up before continuing with its preparation.
Race 8:  Gaypak/United Fruit Handicap 1900m – Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes reported that The Zeebac, although it had some established form on rain affected going, did not handle the very heavy track conditions.  He added The Zeebac had pulled up well following the race and it was his intention to continue with its preparation.
Mr L Prior, representing trainer Mr C Waller, reported that Praise Be had pulled up well following its unplaced effort.
Race 9:  Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap 1100m – Trainer Mr G Frazer reported that Hurrara had pulled up showing some effects of a hard run on the heavy track.  He added he would now freshen up the gelding prior to its next race start.
    
 

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

As App. A Hyeronimus could not claim down to his riding weight, the following rider substitutions were made:

Race 7 App. J Taylor on Empress Milly.

App. Hyeronimus was fined the sum of $300 (LR70).
    

RACE 1:  Australian Turf Club Plate 1000m:
Dolphus was slow to begin.  Secret Delight jumped awkwardly.  That’s A Good Idea, which was slow to begin, shifted out and bumped Perfect Knowledge, resulting in Perfect Knowledge being steadied away from the heels of Magondo.  Agulhas overraced in the early and middle stages.  App. J Taylor, rider of Magondo, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that, after improving to the inside of the heels of Brilliant Snitzel rounding the home turn, she shifted in when insufficiently clear of That’s A Good Idea, resulting in that runner losing its rightful running and having to be checked.  App. Taylor’s permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 24 June 2012 and to expire on Friday, 6 July 2012,on which day she may ride.  When questioned regarding the performance of Brilliant Snitzel, T Berry stated that the filly may not have backed up from its win on a heavy track at Gosford on 7 June 2012 and, in his view, did not handle the step up in class today.  He added that, after receiving a bump from Secret Delight on the home turn, his mount failed to finish the race off.  A post-race veterinary examination of Brilliant Snitzel did not reveal any abnormalities.  Stable representative Mr B Banfield undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Brilliant Snitzel subsequent to the race.

RACE 2:  JDC Flooring Handicap 1300m:
Forever Crazy was badly crowded on jumping away between Your Song and She’s A Girl, both of which shifted ground.  In the incident She’s A Girl became unbalanced when turned out across the running of Forever Crazy.  Passing the 1250m Raw Snitzel was briefly hampered when She’s A Stalker shifted in.  Zar Zar Binks, which had been inclined to overrace, hung out rounding the home turn.  App. S Guymer, rider of Forever Crazy, was fined the sum of $200 after pleading guilty to an offence under AR118A of having changed his safety vest after the weigh.  A post-race veterinary examination of Weepu, which weakened quickly after leading, did not reveal any abnormalities.  App. S Clipperton, rider of sixth placegetter, Raw Snitzel, was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out right to the line.

RACE 3:  MC Conners Racing Handicap 1200m:
Queenian was slow to begin.  At the 600m Blue Lion shifted in and struck the running rail.  When questioned, App. J Adams, rider of Blue Lion, stated his mount was never happy in the going, never balanced up and was reluctant to stretch out.  A post-race veterinary examination of Blue Lion revealed the gelding to have abraded its near hind bumper.  Co-trainer Mr M Hawkes concurred with the advice of the rider that Blue Lion had not handled the going and also indicated that today’s race was a big step up in class from its maiden win at Seymour on 6 January 2012.  Mr Hawkes undertook to report on the progress of the gelding subsequent to the race.  Mr B Banfield, representing trainer Mr G Ryan, was spoken to regarding the instructions today for Fast Shanti to be ridden back in the field when the filly had been ridden on pace in moderately run provincial events in recent starts.
 

RACE 4:  South West Kerbing Handicap 1600m:
Glintz threw its head up on jumping away and then was inclined to overrace when being restrained for some distance in the early stages.  C Brown, rider of Cosmonaut, which had been held up for a run in the early part of the straight, was reprimanded for shifting out when not fully clear approaching the 200m, which resulted in Glintz, which was commencing to improve between World Wide and Cosmonaut, having to be steadied and taken back to the inside of Cosmonaut to continue its run.  A post-race veterinary examination of San Zaim did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 5:  Metropolitan Civil Contractors Handicap 2200m:
Stewards clarified with Mr L Prior, stable representative for trainer Mr C Waller, concerning the instructions to be given to rider C Brown.  Mr Prior advised the Stewards that Sour Mash would continue with its recent racing pattern of leading unless it was taken on early in the race.  Palasport, which was fractious in the tie-up stalls, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start.  Near the 600m, when taken out by Harry Trimbole, Palasport came into contact with Mr Tipsy, resulting in Mr Tipsy and Palasport becoming unbalanced.  Shortly after this incident Palasport, which was commencing to give ground and racing in restricted room, had to be checked when further tightened for room between Mr Tipsy and Kim Warrior, both of which shifted ground.  When questioned concerning the performance of Palasport, App. B Spriggs stated that, although his mount struck interference on the home turn, he had not been entirely happy with the action of the gelding.  A post-race veterinary examination of Palasport did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Mr G Hickman was asked to present a veterinary clearance for Palasport prior to its next race.

RACE 6:  Shimano Fishing Handicap 1400m:
Nothing Like Luca, which was fractious in the tie-up stalls, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start.  N Berry, rider of Kimberley Kid, reported his mount pulled hard in the early stages, which resulted in his saddle slipping forward near the 1100m.  As a consequence, Cornwall Park had to be restrained off the heels of Kimberley Kid, which shifted out.  When questioned, C Reith, rider of From The Vault, stated that the gelding jumped particularly well and, as a result, took up a more forward position.  When questioned, App. A Hyeronimus stated Theophorus was most disappointing in weakening, after having a relatively easy passage in the lead.  A post-race veterinary examination of Theophorus did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Mrs L Aspros reported that Theophorus would now be retired.  When questioned, T Berry, rider of Coup Ay Tee, stated his mount travelled reasonably well, but from the 700m was inclined to pull when racing to the outside of the leader, Theophorus, and as a result, failed to finish its race off.  A post-race veterinary examination of Coup Ay Tee revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery.  Stable representative Mr L Prior advised that Coup Ay Tee raced a little keenly and the stable may look to try and ride the gelding with cover at its next start over a shorter distance.  Mr Prior undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Coup Ay Tee subsequent to the race.

RACE 7:  Pluck @ Vinery Handicap 1000m:
Trainer Mr J Pride was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of J Ford as the rider of Hot Fox (LR35(2)).  Empress Milly (App. J Taylor) shifted out at the start, taking Earnest Ernest out, resulting in Urgent Bells being awkwardly placed on the heels of Grand Rhumba, which shifted in.  App. Taylor was advised to make more effort to keep her mounts straight.  Approaching the 600m Empress Milly shifted in, briefly hampering Tarrabandra.  Earnest Ernest and Urgent Bells, which were following, were hampered in consequence.  Passing the 250m Mount Verde was crowded for room between Dehere Hunter and Earnest Ernest (C Reith), which improved into a narrow run to the outside of Tonk (N Berry), which shifted out slightly.  N Berry was told to make more effort to keep his mounts straight.  C Reith was advised that he must ensure there is sufficient room when attempting to improve his position.  Passing the 200m Girls Go Racing ran out, inconveniencing Tonk, which had to be steadied off that runner’s heels.  When questioned, T Berry, rider of Mighty Obvious, stated his mount slipped on jumping away and then he had to make use of the gelding to take up a forward position.  He added that Mighty Obvious was never travelling comfortably and did not appear to handle the soft going.  A post-race veterinary examination of Mighty Obvious did not reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 8:  Warwick Farm Handicap 1400m:
Whitesails was slow to begin.  Magnolia Lane was slow to begin (3L).  Outofafrika was inclined to lay out when trapped wide in the early and middle stages.  Whitesails and Outofafrika bumped on a number of occasions early in the straight, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced, due to Whitesails being inclined to lay out.  Organic Grey was held up on Surpassing’s heels for some distance passing the 200m.  Over the concluding stages Cannery Row was inclined to lay in under pressure.  When questioned, App. J Matthews could offer no explanation for the performance of Rushing To Win, which weakened after leading, except that the mare was inclined to hang out.  A post-race veterinary examination of Rushing To Win did not reveal any abnormalities.  Trainer Mr D Smith indicated that Rushing To Win would now be given a let up prior to racing again.  A post-race veterinary examination of Outofafrika revealed the mare to have swelling to the nearside shoulder and a wound to the off hind pastern.  A post-race veterinary examination of Arms Length did not reveal any abnormalities.
