13 Oct 2017 | Racingandsports.com.au

Sydney will have two new Group 1 races following upgrades for the Warwick Stakes and Surround Stakes approved by the Racing Australia Pattern and Development Committee.

The RA Pattern and Development Commiteee considered a total of 12 races eligible for upgrade and determined that eight races should be upgraded by Racing Australia.

A total of six Australian Turf Club are among the eight events to be upgraded.

The upgraded races are:

• Warwick Stakes (ATC) - Group 2 to Group 1

• Surround Stakes (ATC) - Group 2 to Group 1

• Sheraco Stakes (ATC) - Group 3 to Group 2

• Breeders’ Plate (ATC) - Listed to Group 3

• Gimcrack Stakes (ATC) - Listed to Group 3

• Premier’s Cup (ATC) – Listed to Group 3

• Northam Sprint (Northam Race Club) – Listed to Group 3

• Hawkesbury Gold Rush (Hawkesbury Race Club) – new Listed Race

“The eight races recommended for upgrade enjoy a reputation for quality and are supported by owners and trainers alike and add to the Pattern including provincial areas of Australia,” said RAPDC chair Frances Nelson.

Racing Australia has also agreed to place a moratorium on any downgrade of Pattern Races run at a distance of 2400 metres and longer.

These races will not be subject to downgrade (unless voluntarily) for four years until the end of the 2019/20 season when the position will be reviewed.

“The Committee is keen to ensure that staying races remain an integral part of the Australian racing calendar. We’ll use the moratorium period to strive to develop a strategic plan to further enhance and improve the stayers’ program,” Nelson said.
