Friday meeting preview
21 Apr 2017 | By Larry Foley - kranjiracing.com

Friday meeting preview, selections, comments and odds.

After a bumper Easter weekend of racing which saw the likes of COUNTOFMONTECRISTO and LIM’S CRUSIER continue their respective Group winning runs, it’s back to an all Poly meeting on a Friday night.

But plenty of interest late in the card with the exciting TANNHAUSER ready to show his nine-length maiden win was no fluke in race 8 on the card.

The Michael Clements-trained 3YO was ultra impressive winning first-up after being just fair on debut and punters will flock to the NZ-bred gelding who looks very well-placed at the Novice race conditions.

Elsewhere it may be some Class 5 emergency’s that tempt punters.
Obviously a plethora of entries of late in the lower grades has seen horses being balloted out en-masse, which gives us the unique situation of BIG BANKER (race 4) and IN BOCCA AL LUPO (race 6) being the top-rated horses in the race without a guaranteed start.
To be fair, BIG BANKER finds himself up against similar rated horses over 1700m, however, IN BOCCA AL LUPO is eight points above the top-rated guaranteed starter and he should be good enough to carry 59kg and win.
It’s never that simple but often an emergency can sneak through punters guards so keep them both safe in very suitable races.
Best Bets: (TANNHAUSER race 8, win), (MIGHTY EMPEROR race 4, each-way) and (MARINE TREASURE race 3, value).
Bankers for Jackpots: Race 6 (3, 4, 5, 6 and 13), race 7 (1, 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9), race 8 (1), race 9 (2, 3, 4 and 9).

Race cards and Larry Foley's synopsis follows and for updates on all runners go to www.kranjiracing.com

Please note the odds listed are "reference odds" only.

Race 1

Selections; 1 LET'S TALK NOW - 11 LADY LIBERTY - 6 A LOT IN HAND - 10 LUCKY COMMAND

Not a great race to start proceedings but LET'S TALK NOW showed more than enough last start when dropping to Class 5 to win in this field. That effort was only a week ago with Rodd up but a 3kg claimer in Y Salim looks a good move and he should figure heavily at the business end. In his favour is nothing else jumps off the page but two maidens in his stablemate, LUCKY COMMAND, and the David Hill-trained LADY LIBERTY could show up. LUCKY COMMAND resumes after a good run of form and likewise LADY LIBERTY has looked due and an experienced hoop in Barend Vorster could be telling in this field. Of the rest, A LOT IN HAND looks a solid each way bet and keep the first emergency, ANY RUMOUR, safe as he sneaks into Class 5 although he should need longer.

1 LET'S TALK NOW *** Showed last start he wins in Class 5 sooner than later with 3kg claim a factor. 4.00
2 TASSAJARA ** Poly form is a concern but wins soon in this Company and gate 1 helps. 8.00
3 MAGIC PAINT ** Has looked disappointing at his last couple but form prior keeps him under notice. 12
4 FRENCH VINTAGE ** Resuming. Better over longer but recent trial OK so can include in exotics. 12
5 RACING TALENT * Poly form a concern as is gate and may need longer than this. 10
6 A LOT IN HAND *** Can go forward from wide gate and well worth an each-way look. 8.00
7 MARGAUX * Struggling. 33
8 FLYING WINNER ** Will not win out of turn but in consistent form and a must for exotics. 12
9 FORTUNE SPIRIT * No. 50
10 LUCKY COMMAND *** Resuming. Maiden status a concern but did look due previous campaign so keep safe. 12
11 LADY LIBERTY *** Another long-term maiden who is due and can consider in this field. 6.00
12 SMART MASTER ** Disappointing last start with support but gets blinkers and could show up. 7.00
13 ANY RUMOUR *** Should need longer to win but sneaks into Class 5 and not without a chance. 20
14 LIM'S BATTLE ** Solid without threatening at his last couple but can include in exotics. 12

Race 2

Selections; 2 HUN YEANG VILLAGE - 4 RIKIOH - 1 GOLDEN SPARK - 3 RED GENERAL

Some dead-set imposters in this Poly sprint so the mantra would be “play with extreme caution". In saying that there are some horses that look ready to win including HUN YEANG VILLAGE who showed last start that he wins soon in Class 5. And given that run was over 1200m and he drops to his pet distance in 1000m in this, he is the one to beat. GOLDEN SPARK is a maiden but also showed last start that Class 5 Company is to his liking. He pulled up not striding on that occasion and will give this a shake if right on the day. It gets interesting after the pair mentioned with RED GENERAL showing enough last start to think he can win in this Company while RIKIOH did it tough enough when resuming to win with Dan Beasley up. SUCCESS COME TRUE, LIVELY DRAGON and even PERFECT CURIOSITY over an unsuitable trip could all win without surprising. Keep the emergency RORY safe with Vlad Duric a factor.

1 GOLDEN SPARK *** Excuses not to win last start (including returning not striding) and wins if right. 4.00
2 HUN YEANG VILLAGE *** Showed last start why Class 5 on the Poly is his caper and could be hard to beat. 5.00
3 RED GENERAL *** Has not lived up to expectations after maiden win but excuses last start (not striding) in this Company and can win this with gate 1 a factor. 12
4 RIKIOH *** Did it tough when resuming from wide alley and would give this a shake on best form. 6.00
5 SHE'S THE ONE * May appreciate Class 5 Company but should need longer. 50
6 SUCCESS COME TRUE *** Maiden who was not a mile away last start in this Company and worth thought from gate 2. 10
7 LIVELY DRAGON *** Looks ready to win one of these and gets his chance with winkers added. 6.00
8 NEO'S CLASSIC * No. 50
9 PERFECT CURIOSITY *** Should need longer to win but this race is weak enough to have a say late. 8.00
10 LUCKY BOY * Shown little since recent placing in Class 4 and have to take on trust. 20
11 KNIGHT HARLOOK * Blinkers on after some poor efforts and easier to ignore. 33
12 ROMA ** A long time between wins but have to respect on the Poly. 12
13 RORY *** In solid form and always a winning show over this trip on the Poly. 5.00
14 DRAGON RUBY * Ran on well two starts back but easier to ignore. 50

Race 3

Selections; 2 CLARTON SUPER - 4 MARINE TREASURE - 8 HAYTHAM - 1 GATO NEGRO

It's safe to say that GATO NEGRO is hard to catch for pundits and punters alike. But it's hard to fault his career record of eight wins and 11 placings from 52 starts and given he won one of these last start (when we weren't on), he has to be respected and wins again without surprising too much. It might be a maiden who is hardest to beat though. CLARTON SUPER had one run in Australia and while placing on that occasion, he arrived with little fanfare before putting in a solid effort at his Singapore debut. He just missed from a wide gate at his next start and that effort has him hard to beat here after drawing gate 1. Of the rest, PREFERRED and HAYTHAM pick themselves on Poly form but one to watch closely is MARINE TREASURE who has trialled well since changing stables and could show up at value.

1 GATO NEGRO *** Not the type to win out of turn but last start victory in similar affair and must be respected. 4.00
2 CLARTON SUPER *** Backed up solid Singapore debut with a very good effort in similar affair to this and can win from gate 1. 4.00
3 DRAGON HIGHNESS * Appreciates first up run but like to see something before considering. 20
4 MARINE TREASURE *** Resuming for new trainer. Nothing last campaign but has ability and recent trials good enough to win this. 12
5 PREFERRED *** Can mix his form but has looked due and will work into this late. 5.00
6 NATURAL IMPULSE ** Thereabouts without threatening of late and may be looking for easier. 33
7 JUSTICE LASS ** Former UK galloper who has trialled well enough locally to consider with G Boss onboard. 12
8 HAYTHAM *** Last run better than the result and always looks a winning hope on the Poly. 6.00
9 HIKO YUNIKON ** Recent win was in Class 5 but always competitive on this surface. 12
10 AMAZEALOT ** Ran on well in similar affair last start but like to see in something easier. 20
11 SATELLITE PRINCE * Tongue-tie off. Needs easier and longer before we consider. 50
12 ALAMAK BOY * Maiden who needs much easier. 50

Race 4

Selections; 13 BIG BANKER - 5 PERFECT CHALLENGER - 7 WINNING STAR - 3 ASTRO MAN

There must be a backlog of Class 5 horses being balloted out of these staying races, as the top rated horse in this field, BIG BANKER, isn't guaranteed a start. That is rare but if the 4YO does get a run, he might be hard to beat. His recent form does look ordinary on paper but he won his last two in Class 5 and his Poly victory was very good. NO SMOKING JEFF - the second emergency - also looks a chance back in Class 5 and worth following. As it stands though, PERFECT CHALLENGER and WINNING STAR both placed last start in similar affairs to this with heavy support and both could make amends. ASTRO MAN is another that appeals on recent form but is being tested at the distance.

1 MR MIURA * No. 50
2 CAPTAIN ROYAL ** Form looks hopeless but has placed on the Poly and had some support last start when wide and disappointing. 12
3 ASTRO MAN *** Tested this trip but has a Poly win to his name and could play a big part in this from gate 1. 6.00
4 PERCIUS * In form but Poly form a serious concern. 8.00
5 PERFECT CHALLENGER *** Came in for heavy support when placing last start but can make amends in a race that suits. 3.00
6 GENERAL CONATUS ** Won a weak one four starts back and exotics look best. 20
7 WINNING STAR *** Another who came in for heavy support last stat when placing and can make amends. 3.80
8 DANNY * The pipes, the pipes are calling. 50
9 MANMADHAN * Thereabouts of late but better on the turf. 10
10 PINYIN ** Longtime between wins but in the mix as a rule. 20
11 PURE WHITE * Long-term maiden who is easier to ignore. 33
12 SIMPANG ** Form better than it reads and could give this a shake at odds back on his preferred surface. 20
13 BIG BANKER *** Ignore recent form as he sneaks back into Class 5 in a very winnable race. 5.00
14 NO SMOKING JEFF *** Another that drops back to recent winning Class so ignore recent form and seriously consider. 20

Race 5

Selections; 4 GOLD FAITH - 1 MIGHTY EMPEROR - 3 SUPERNOVA - 6 DAVINCI

A very good Class 4 field and plenty of options for punters including GOLD FAITH for trainer David Hill. The former UK based runner put in a very solid effort at his Singapore debut and has subsequently trialled nicely suggesting he can improve and win. But he will have to be good to beat MIGHTY EMPEROR who finds himself in the right Company with Juglall from gate 4 a winning combination. SMART LAD showed enough last start over 1200m to think he is ready to win again stepping up to a more suitable trip with Y Salim claiming 3kg. Who else can win? DACVINCI has the recent runs on the board and can win again this campaign while CHAIRMAN has showed more than enough at three starts in Singapore to win soon. SUPERNOVA is racing and trialling well and might be value as will be ARR FLAIR. Good luck!

1 MIGHTY EMPEROR *** In solid form in better Company and hard to beat in Class 4. 5.00
2 SMART LAD *** Ran on well over 1200m last start and better suited here. Can win. 6.00
3 SUPERNOVA *** In form and coming off nice trial so can win. 6.00
4 GOLD FAITH *** Singapore debut was solid and subsequent trial was good. Step up in trip also in his favour. 6.00
5 SUPER JOE ** Very disappointing in similar suitable affair last start but worth another look. 20
6 DAVINCI *** In fine form and will be making his presence felt late. 6.00
7 CHAIRMAN *** Having first start on the Poly in Singapore but shown more than enough at three starts to win. 6.00
8 SILENT ARROW ** Might need easier to win but hard to fault honest form of late and a must for exotics. 12
9 VERBAL LINK * No. 50
10 ARR FLAIR *** Did it tough from the wide gate before running on last start to consider from gate 1. 20
11 DESERT FOX ** Showed last start he can handle the trip and pay to keep safe. 20

Race 6

Selections; 13 IN BOCCA AL LUPO - 6 BASTION - 3 KASHAN - 4 HERECOMESMYMONEY

Another Class 5 event where the top rated horse - this time by a fair margin - is the emergency and will be hard to beat if he gets a start. The horse in question is IN BOCCO AL LUPO and connections will be hoping something pulls out, as he might not get a better chance back on his winning surface to knock in his second career victory. And to be fair there doesn't look much to beat. BASTION is a nineteen start maiden who is in form and should win one sooner than later and HERCOMESMYMONEY looks ready to break his maiden status. KASHAN should need longer but placed last start this trip so has to be respected while TENMA looked to have excuses last start so is worth another look. But one eye on the scratching’s and two eyes on IN BOCCO AL LUPO.

1 TIME AFTER TIME ** Not far away at his last couple and pay to follow. 6.00
2 GREATBALLS OF FIRE ** Disappointing with support last start but had been running on in similar affairs so keep safe. 8.00
3 KASHAN *** Best form over longer but placed this trip last start so has to be a show. 6.00
4 HERECOMESMYMONEY *** Maiden who had excuses before running on well last start and should go close. 5.00
5 TENMA *** Never involved last start and jockey reported not striding and well worth another look from gate 1. 7.00
6 BASTION *** Nineteen start maiden with foot on the till and can win this. 6.00
7 LAM EDITION ** Broke long-term maiden status on this surface two starts back and should figure. 12
8 GOOD BET ** Coming off two improved efforts and saddle slipped last start so can include in exotics at value. 12
9 PETITE VICTOIRE * Easier to ignore. 50
10 SUVARNABHUMI ** Goes OK on his day and has trialled OK on the Poly but turf looks his caper. 12
11 BONJOUR BOB * Struggles as a rule. 33
12 CASSIS OOLONG * Last start OK but wide gate suggests another day. 33
13 IN BOCCA AL LUPO *** Showing more than enough since dropping to Class 5 to win back on his only winning surface. 5.00
14 IMMORTAL LEGACY ** Yet to place in seven starts but Poly form OK and will be long odds. 33

Race 7

Selections; 3 GOLDEN TOMAHAWK - 1 SUPER SIX - 9 RED DAWN - 8 NOVA MISSILE

A cracking Poly Class 3 sprint and with so many in form horses it could be a case of looking for value or conversely see where the money is going. And also how the track is playing given that GOLDEN TOMAHAWK is a dead-set swooper and if he can find breathing space in transit from gate 1 and the race is run to suit, he will be hard to hold out. SUPER SIX is probably the horse he passes late if he was to win. The 6YO has been in very good Poly form of late and he should race prominently throughout for Dan Beasley. A value runner might be last start Class 4 winner, RED DAWN. Obviously this is tougher but his recent trial was nice and he could show up at each-way odds. CADET, EATONS GOLD and NOVA MISSILE just three more that win without surprising.

1 SUPER SIX *** Foot on the till and can overcome wide gate and win. 4.00
2 CONFLIGHT * Struggled since Group win as a 3YO and have to ignore. 50
3 GOLDEN TOMAHAWK *** In terrific form and hard to hold out of race run to suit swoopers. 3.50
4 DRAGONHEAD * Best effort in Singapore was on the Poly but hard to have. 33
5 EATONS GOLD *** Super honest and supported when winning last start so pay to follow. 8.00
6 CADET *** Excuses for only bad run of late and pay to keep following through the grades. 6.00
7 MYSTIC MASTER ** Three-year-old who will find this easier than the Rocket Man Sprint and should figure throughout. 12
8 NOVA MISSILE *** Hard to fault Poly form and wins this without surprising. 6.00
9 RED DAWN *** Broke Poly duck in Class 4 last start but has subsequently trialled well and pay to keep very safe. 12
10 BEST WISHES * No. 100
11 MIGHTY CONQUEROR ** Like to see in easier Company but in form and another to include in exotics. 12

Race 8

Selections; 1 TANNHAUSER - 6 AOTEAROA - 2 BEAR WITNESS - 11 NOVA CLASSIC

After TANNHAUSER trounced his maiden rivals by some nine lengths when winning on resumption at start two, the questions may be how short he starts and how far he wins by. Yes, it's never that cut and dried and he is up against some handier types here, but that win - or the margin - will burn into the punters psyche and he is the only horse they will jump on. And why not? The Clement stable is in form and this race is more than suitable to back up that win. Who makes it interesting? BEAR WITNESS won well on debut and the form from that race has held up so he looks a solid option while AOTEAROA and AUSPICIOUS ACE both appreciate the race conditions and the Poly. Two newcomers in SITUATION (raced) and NOVA CLASSIC (unraced) on debut have trialled well enough to consider.

1 TANNHAUSER *** Smashed them when resuming and extremely hard to beat on that effort. 1.60
2 BEAR WITNESS ** Won well on debut and that form has held up so must be respected. 4.00
3 HYDRANT * No. 200
4 METTLESOME * Needs easier. 200
5 GREAT SEVEN * Debut run on Poly OK so could sneak into exotic combos at value. 50
6 AOTEAROA ** Not far away last start and Singapore debut win was on the Poly so keep safe. 8.00
7 AUSPICIOUS ACE ** Supported last start when disappointing late but tongue-tie on so keep safe. 20
8 SITUATION ** US-bred 3YO who raced in Ireland. Local trials good enough to consider. 12
9 FAREES * Singapore debut solid but may want longer. 33
10 ELITE GUSTAVO * No. 200
11 NOVA CLASSIC ** Debutante who has trialled very well and b the surprise packet with market best guide. 10

Race 9

Selections; 9 DRAGON KINGDOM - 2 FAITHFULLY - 3 SAVAGE STORM - 4 PREMIER FIGHTER

It's not often you pick a maiden with any confidence in Class 4 but DRAGON KINGDOM looks an exception to the rule after sowing he is more than up to winning at this level. In fact he had excuses not to finish closer to Eatons Gold last start in BM67 Company and that form more than holds up here on a lightweight. You have to respect the likes of last start winner SAVAGE STORM though and FAITHFULLY is always a solid each-way hope at value in this type of race. PREMIER FIGHTER one more to watch on the strength of his maiden win two starts back but nothing else appeals.

1 PURE JUSTICE ** Form OK but does look a better winning option on the turf. 8.00
2 FAITHFULLY *** Always an each-way show in race like this. 8.00
3 SAVAGE STORM *** Won last start in similar affair and pay to keep following. 6.00
4 PREMIER FIGHTER *** Can go forward from the wide gate and could be hard to pass late if on song. 6.00
5 SUPER BRILLIANT ** Always in the mix on the Poly and often value. 12
6 ROC THAT ** Resuming after a poor campaign but recent trial was good so look for improvement at odds. 33
7 BARNATO ** Race form poor but recent trial good enough to keep safe with blinkers off and tongue-tie on. 20
8 CASTLE QUEEN ** Will improve with racing this campaign and switch to Poly could see improvement. 20
9 DRAGON KINGDOM *** Maiden who has shown more than enough in this type of Company or better to win. 6.00
10 PERFECT COMMANDO * Speedy but needs Class 5. 33
11 THE MIGHTY THOR ** First up run after bleeding attack was good enough to follow back on winning surface. 20
12 STARPERFECT * Needs easier and longer. 50
