As the Stewards were satisfied that the racing manners of BLIZZING AWAY and the circumstances of the race had resulted in this incident rather than any carelessness exhibited by any rider, no further action was taken.
Passing the 400 Metres, KHAKI was bumped and taken wider by ENJOY LIFE which shifted to the outside of GUY DRAGON to obtain clear running.
At the entrance to the Straight, BLIZZING AWAY and WIN WIN raced tight between SUREWIN which was giving ground and EMPIRE STAR which was racing tight outside the heels of RULETHEROOST which shifted out marginally.
Close to the finishing line, EMPIRE STAR was shifted out away from the heels of PICKEN which drifted out under pressure.
For the majority of the race, SUREWIN travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, S de Sousa (KHAKI) stated that, from the outside barrier, he was asked to attempt to obtain a forward position on the horse, however, if KHAKI did not show sufficient speed, then he should shift the horse across behind runners and obtain cover. He said after riding his mount positively in the early stages, KHAKI did not show sufficient speed to take up a forward position and therefore he steadied the horse after the 1300 Metres and obtained cover towards the rear of the field.
After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on DESTIN at the request of Trainer P O’Sullivan. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, DESTIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

MY WINNER, which was following CHATER THUNDER, was shifted out away from the heels of that horse in consequence. D Whyte was severely reprimanded and advised whilst competitive riding is encouraged and that whilst the shift at this time was not an abrupt one and one which occurs in a lot of races in Hong Kong, nonetheless he has an obligation to ensure that he exercises due care when shifting ground so that other horses do not become unbalanced as a result of those shifts.
Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that the riding of S de Sousa (FLAME LILY), 6th placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse’s finishing position, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels all the way to the end of the race where circumstances permit.
EVER LAUGH and I DO were sent for sampling.

He said he shifted his mount rounding the Home Turn to the outside of HELENE LEADINGSTAR and after quickening well then came under pressure after the 300 Metres. He said NICCONI EXPRESS was then disappointing in the manner in which it failed to finish off the race. He added he could detect no fault in NICCONI EXPRESS’ action and the only explanation that might explain its disappointing performance was the fact that the horse was stepping up to the 1800 Metres for the first time today on a track that was firmer than those which it had raced on when ridden by him. A veterinary inspection of NICCONI EXPRESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of GRAND CHANCELLOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

He said however that he became concerned with the manner in which it was going to finish off the race near the 500 Metres when he asked the horse to improve and it did not quicken as he anticipated. He said D B PIN came under pressure in the early part of the Straight and then did not finish off the race in the Straight as it had in the past. He added, in his opinion, COMFORT LIFE may be better suited over shorter distances so that the horse can relax and finish off the race better than it did on this occasion. A veterinary inspection of COMFORT LIFE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
