Newbury and Doncaster officials confident Saturday's cards will survive rain

Saturday's feature meetings at Newbury and Doncaster are being monitored closely with Storm Jorge forecast to hit Britain this weekend, but both tracks are hopeful racing will go ahead.

The courses raced on testing ground on Friday and host the two big handicaps on Saturday. Overnight rain and strong winds are expected but the courses do not believe it will force their respective meetings to be cancelled.

Doncaster is forecast further rain overnight after 6mm fell on the track on Friday. The hurdle and chase course raced on heavy ground on the first of the two-day Grimthorpe meeting.

Doncaster's clerk of the course Roderick Duncan said after racing on Friday: "We've gone to heavy from good to soft, soft in places today. The forecast for tomorrow has improved a little bit and there's a chance of showers overnight, but the rain should have gone through us by 8am. There will be strong winds but I can't see any issues."

Racing on ITV4 is at the Town Moor course on Saturday, with four races to be broadcast from the track including the 888Sport Grimthorpe Handicap Chase.

Two races will be shown from Newbury, where conditions are being monitored. There was 10mm of rain forecast on Friday but only 6mm fell, meaning course officials are "more than hopeful" that racing will get the green light.

Newbury's clerk of the course Keith Ottesen said after racing on Friday: "Given we're in good shape today, we'll wait until tomorrow before we make any decisions. I could put a precautionary inspection on, but we don't want to alarm anybody and we've been perfectly raceable today. I'm more than hopeful we'll be racing.

"It stopped raining a lot sooner than we thought it would. We had 5mm up until 12.30pm and we've only had another 1mm or so after that, when we could have had 10mm today. The jockeys just think it's soft ground but I put heavy in places because of some areas on the hurdle track.

"We'll wait and see what rain we get overnight. We've had checks for wind to make sure everything is secure. It's supposed to peak with the strongest gusts at 7am and we don't race until the afternoon, so we'll have a look at that."

Saturday's card at Navan has been cancelled due to severe winds being forecast.

Chepstow's card on Monday has been called off due to waterlogging, with the track taking 25mm of rainfall on Friday and further heavy rain forecast over the weekend.
