Children Saddle Up in the Summer School Holidays

A number of up-and-coming Victorian jockeys will teach children how to ride when Racing Victoria’s (RV) Saddle Up School Holiday Program visits Geelong Racing Club and Melbourne Racing Club next week.

The ‘Saddle Up Summer Series’ will visit Geelong on Tuesday, 22 January 2019 in an exciting first for local residents.

Talented apprentice Tahlia Hope, who recently rode winners at Flemington and Caulfield, will take part in the program by showing children in attendance how she prepares for a big race.

On Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 January, the Saddle Up School Holiday Program will travel to Caulfield Racecourse, with Steph Thornton and Jess Eaton both taking part.

Steph Thornton, affectionately known as the “Queen of The Valley” for her exceptional strike rate around the circuit, will visit Caulfield on Wednesday to teach children the fundamentals of riding a horse and take them into the inner sanctum for a day in the life of a jockey.

Apprentice Jess Eaton, who was named the Victorian Jockeys Association’s Outstanding Apprentice Jockey in Training last December, will take part in the program next Thursday.

Operating between 8.30am and 5.30pm at each club, the program for primary school-aged children will offer a range of fun and informative activities that connect youngsters with horses and racing.

Kids will design their own jockey colours in readiness to compete in the coveted ‘Saddle Up Cup’ as well as take part in a variety of sport and art activities.

All activities will be jointly facilitated by RV and Kelly Sports at a cost of $80 per child (including GST).

The Saddle Up Summer Series will run on the following dates:
