Belladeel shows potential with Farm win

There might be some way to go before Belladeel shows his true potential, and perhaps with an ultimate gear change, but the Dundeel colt’s win at start number two in the $50,000, Autumn Carnival On Sale Handicap (1400m) for maiden three-year-old colts and geldings at Warwick Farm on Wednesday demonstrated promise.

Jockey James McDonald summed up the race commenting that ‘He has a lot to learn, a lot of ability but pretty raw’.

A change of tactics helped the cause after the Waller stable trained Belladeel had led on debut over 1400m on the Kensington track at Randwick to then fade to finish fifth.

On Wednesday McDonald settled Belladeel behind the leaders although the colt did not appreciate the learning experience. Off the turn for the run home Big Data (NZ) (55.5kg) and Tim Clark slipped a 2L margin at the 300m, but McDonald had Belladeel (58.5kg) chasing and they were level at the 200m.

Belladeel was then pushed out by McDonald  and even though the colt was still not sure about lengthening out he was not troubled to win by 1 1/4L. Tactical Formation (Mossman) (59kg) and Josh Parr came well late for second with Big Data (Dalghar) and Clark third, the margin 1/2L.

The time was 1.23.74 on the Good 4 track with the final 600m in 34.97.

“He is a very good colt and it was good to see him do things right today. He won with a bit of authority,” said Chris Waller.

Waller said that while he was sure that Belladeel was up to a better standard of races, time was of the essence with this colt and that of the progeny of his sire Dundeel.

Belladeel, out of the Iffraaj mare Giovanna Bella, traces back on his dam side to Hula Dance so there is plenty of racing success in his pedigree and the patience of his connections may well be rewarded.

Owned by Mr A I Craig, Mrs W A Craig, Three Hooks Seafood, Mr D L Collier, Mr A Focas, Mr A M Muollo, Mr L Hadjipareskeva, Mr B Kazi, Mr D Portolesi, Mr J Geneid and Mr I Goodlet the colt has now scored his first city win and stakes of $24,400.

Waller won the three-year-old maiden fillies division, Events BY ATC Handicap (1400m), as well with Savabeel filly Lady Cuvee (NZ) carrying 54kg under apprentice Sam Weatherly. It was Lady Cuvee’s fourth race start. It was Waller’s 91st Sydney winner this season.
