Bold on-pace win for Direct Charge

A bold on-pace effort ensured Direct Charge became the third winner in the space of 24 hours for Cranbourne trainer Robbie Laing in Saturday’s $150,000, Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington.

Laing produced Parvenu to win at Friday’s Sale meeting while Andre Roo Hoo scored impressively at that evening’s Cranbourne meeting before Direct Charge’s game effort.

The son of Charge Forward indicated his talent with two solid runs in lucrative events in October before putting it all together to post his maiden stakes victory in the $150,000 event.

Steven Arnold stuck with Direct Charge after partnering the colt at his first two starts. The Cox Plate-winning jockey sent the youngster straight to the front on the inner section of the track, where he set a good gallop.

Direct Charge found himself two lengths clear with 150 metres to travel but had to fight hard to hold off his last-start conqueror Crack A Roadie to score by a half-head to justify Laing’s decision to spend $105,000 on the colt at the 2012 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

“He is a big, rangy fellow (at) 16.1 (hands), not a lot of body about him yet but he’s got a massive stride,” Laing said.

“The idea was to let him roll along up near the lead and at any stage if he was travelling well enough to go forward because he doesn’t have an electric finish at the moment.

“He is a promising horse.”

Laing said he would campaign Direct Charge in Sydney early in 2013 as he attempts to chase rich events restricted to graduates of Inglis yearling sales.

“I bought him from the January (Inglis) Classic Sale in Sydney and that’s been out target the whole time we bought him because he was the second top priced colt (at that sale),” Laing said.

“He’ll have a run in Sydney late December or early January and then he’ll go to the Classic on January 12 at Rosehill.”

The Danny O’Brien-trained Shamus Award raced handy to the pace before finishing third.
