Cup winning George Podmore passes away

Melbourne Cup winning jockey George Podmore has died after a long illness aged 79 reports

The highlight of Podmore's long career was his win aboard Evening Peal in the 1956 Melbourne Cup after the pair claimed the VRC-AJC Australian Oaks double the previous season.

During a career which spanned four decades, Podmore also counted a Sydney Cup, three Metropolitan Handicaps, a Doomben Cup and a Stradbroke Handicap among his big race wins.

Affectionately known as Georgie Porgie, Podmore also finished runner-up twice to the great George Moore in the Sydney premiership and retired to the Gold Coast some years ago.
