Trainer Richard Fahey said on Friday that fast ground at York next week could hinder Darley Cup winner Mayson in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.
Mayson, who has improved out of all recognition this season, slammed his July Cup rivals by five lengths on heavy ground last month.
The trainer, writing in his Sportling Life column, said: "A decision has yet to be taken on whether Mayson runs in the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.
"I'm not scared to drop him back to five furlongs but if it's quick ground it could just be on the sharp side for him.
"We'll monitor the weather but at the moment it looks like it's going to be a dry week."
Mayson is no bigger than 10-1 with Ladbrokes to claim Nunthorpe glory but Paddy Power and William Hill go shortest at 7-1.
The ground at York was described as good to firm, good in places on Friday.
