Galileo's Choice lands Ballyroan enroute to Melbourne
11 Aug 2012 | Racingpost.com

Report: Leopardstown,  Thursday

Ballyroan Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f, 3yo+

Galileo's Choice continued his progression with victory in the Ballyroan Stakes while Treasure Beach could only finish fourth on his first start in Ireland for more than a year.

Sent off favourite, Galileo's Choice travelled along in the middle of the field as Bob Le Beau, one of two runners in the race trained by Jessica Harrington for Cristina Patino while Steps Of Freedon also went for the trainer, made the pace.

Rounding the home turn Galileo's Choice forged into the lead as Bible Belt slipped into the place lost by stablemate Bob Le Beau on the rail. Treasure Beach meanwhile challenged wide around the turn under jockey Colm O'Donoghue.

Galileo's Choice was challenged by Bible Belt but was too strong for the filly and had a length and a half to spare over Massiyn, who stayed on strongly to grab second, at the line.

Treasure Beach, who has run in the US, France, Canada, Hong Kong and Dubai since winning the Irish Derby last summer, was well placed to attack the lead in the straight but was unable to go through with his assault having also been keen in the early stages and plugged on for fourth.

Winning trainer Dermot Weld said: "That was a very good renewal - a proper race with proper horse. Galileo's Choice has proven hinmsef the best in terms of the distance.

"I imagine the Irish St Leger will be next and he'll be entered in the Melbourne Cup and we'll see what happens with that."
