Duntle lands first Group success in Desmond Stakes
18 Aug 2012 | Racingpost.com

Report: Leopardstown, Thursday

Desmond Stakes (Group 3) 1m, 3yo+

Duntle, a Listed winner at Royal Ascot in June, landed the first Group success of her career when she captured the Desmond Stakes at Leopardstown on Thursday.

Trained by David Wachman for the Niarchos family, Duntle beat 16 fillies in the Sandringham Handicap at the royal meeting and followed up that success in style, seeing off Ballybacka Lady and Requisition.

A step into Group 1 company could await the 5-2 winner who is engaged in the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes back at Leopardstown on September 8.

Her Sandringham win came on good ground and jockey Wayne Lordan thinks she is better on a sounder surface rather than the soft one she encountered in the Desmond Stakes.

"She struggled a bit on the ground early on, but the last two furlongs are a bit better ground," he said. "She picked up well from there and definitely prefers nicer conditions."

Takar, the 9-4 favourite, disappointed his backers and was well beaten.
