Lucas Cranach out of spring racing
08 Aug 2012 | Racingandsports.com.au Early market Spring Cups favourite Lucas Cranach (GER) has been ruled out of the upcoming Victorian Spring Racing Carnival due to a bone chip which will require surgery later this week.
The Anthony Freedman-trained five-year-old Mamool entire sat at the top of early Melbourne Cup markets at $17, however he has now been ruled out of competing in the race that stops a nation due to a bone chip.
His latest injury is in the approximate region as the bone chip detected near a sesamoid which resulted in the German import's autumn campaign coming to an abrupt end.
“It is an injury in the same area he suffered one in March,” Freedman said.
“It is a fresh chip, only very small but it is annoying him and it needs to come out.
“We bit the bullet, we will get it [operation] done and start again.
“We will start the process and do everything we can to get him back.
“Re-injuring the same area is always a concern. We are trying to find a positive. We will get the surgery done this week and start his rehab with me next probably week and we will take it one step at a time,” he said.
Lucas Cranach has shown glimpses of his ability during limited opportunities in Australia.
After a first up fifth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup over 2400m in October last spring he was third in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup over 3200m at Flemington behind Dunaden (IRE), although suffering from leg problems.
Lucas Cranach returned in excellent fashion during the autumn when a dominant winner of the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield.
A bone chip on the eve of the Australian Cup then ruled Lucas Cranach out of further autumn racing.
“It is very disappointing for the owners who have been great supporters and very understanding,” Freedman told Sky Sports Radio.
“I delivered the news yesterday which is never a nice thing to do. Obviously I am as disappointed as they are but that is the nature of this game, we'll deal with it and move on.
“Given the time frame and given the amount of work required to get them through to the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup there was a long way to go so it is better to do it [operation] now.
“As disappointing as it is we're some chance of making Hong Kong in December if all things go to plan however we won't obviously know that for a while yet.”
Lucas Cranach, a Group 2 winner over 2412m at Hamburg last June, has won stakes of $660,00 in his brief Australian career to-date.
