More to come from Rusambo
06 Aug 2012 | By James Buckley - racingandsports.com.au Peter Snowden colt Rusambo finally shed his lingering maiden tag on Saturday and the jockey who rode him to victory believes there’s plenty more to come.
Vlad Duric had to be patient aboard the three-year-old who jumped very clumsily from the Moonee Valley barriers, but he showed an impressive turn of foot to prove too strong in the Benchmark 72 Handicap (1200m) for three-year-olds.
“He jumped sideways out of the barrier and actually ripped my boot open,” Duric said.
“That’s why he came out a little bit slow he was just awkward out of the barriers which didn’t matter in the end.
“I galloped him on the Tuesday and he put in a really nice gallop and I was really pleased with how he worked, he gave me the feel of a quality colt.”
The win was a long time coming for the son of Elusive Quality, who debuted 10 months ago in the Breeders Plate running third behind Pierro.
He ran an unlucky second in the colts and geldings Blue Diamond Prelude back in February then was well held in the both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and the Group 2 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
Rusambo resumed at Caulfield three weeks back but was ridden a lot more forward and faded late on to run fifth under Steven Arnold.
“Paul [Snowden] was basically saying that first-up he just overraced a bit and it just took away his finish,” Duric said.
“He was really keen for me just to ride the horse quietly. He’s got a really good finish when you ride him like that.
“His first start with Pierro he actually took ground off him at the finish and that form’s obviously first class.
“He was very unlucky at Caulfield [in the Blue Diamond Prelude], he got held up in behind them. I think Kerrin [McEvoy] rode him he had to push his way out and then he hit the line late.
“If he didn’t get stopped in his tracks for a few strides he probably would’ve got up and won the race.
“He’s obviously got a lot of talent and he’s come back really well this preparation.
“I’m pretty confident he’ll be competitive in the better races.”
